An 11-year-old girl allegedly punched a woman in the face while attempting to rob a Cairns pharmacy.

It's alleged she and another girl, 13, confronted staff at the pharmacy as they tried to steal items from the business on Wednesday.

The 11-year-old girl punched a female employee in the face, while the older girl kicked another in the leg, police said.

The pair had allegedly returned to the pharmacy after stealing items from the business and nearby store earlier in the day.

Both have been charged with a string of offences, including assault and stealing, and will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.
