A 15-year-old girl has serious head and spinal injuries after she and another teenager were thrown from a homemade toboggan being towed by a 4WD along a West Australian beach.

Police say the tow rope broke in the Thursday afternoon incident on Wedge Island, 180km north of Perth. An 18-year-old woman had minor injuries and both teenagers were flown to hospital by the RAC Rescue Helicopter.

The 4WD driver, a 51 year old man, is assisting Jurien Bay police with their inquiries.
