Red Dog director Kriv Stenders is making a documentary about seminal 1980s Brisbane band, The Go-Betweens.

Stenders has a history with the band, formed in the late 1970s by Grant McLennan and Robert Forster, having directed several of their music videos.

"This is very much a dream project for me, as The Go-Betweens and their music have been a fundamental part of my life since I was 15 years old. To be able to tell and share their epic story and to have original members onboard with me is a thrill beyond definition," Stenders said.

The film, Right Here: The Go-Betweens, will follow the rise and fall of the band who split in 1989, reformed in 2000 and then lost founding member McLennan in 2006 who died of a heart attack.

Stenders will be working on the film with the remaining members of the band including Forster, drummer Lindy Morrison, bassist Robert Vickers and violinist Amanda Brown.

"Kriv Stenders is an artist in film and I am sure he will tell the story of The Go-Betweens with flair and precision," Forster said.

Morrison said this will be the first time the band's story will have been told.

"I am as excited as any Go-Betweens enthusiast to see the tales that may unfold in this chronicle of our years together," she said.

According to Brown: "The Go-Betweens - we were the unruly child of art, love and the ties that bind."

The film is the first to be commissioned under the Documentary Feature Fund, a three-year joint initiative between Screen NSW and ABC TV Arts.

Over the three years, one new feature length arts documentary will be funded a year and each film will premiere at the Sydney Film Festival before being screened on ABC TV.

Screen Australia is the major investor in the film through its documentary program.

Right Here: The Go-Betweens will premiere at the 2017 Sydney Film Festival.
