Gotye is set to return to the Australian music scene after a six-year hiatus working on solo and group projects.

Whispers of new music from the Grammy Award-winning artist, real name Wally De Backer, have been swirling for some time but were confirmed on Friday by his three-piece Melbourne-based band The Basics, on Friday.

His last album Making Mirrors, including the hit single Somebody That I Used to Know with New Zealand singer Kimbra, was released in 2011.

"Okay, so we know a new Gotye record is on the way; we can also say there's a new Basics record that's pretty much done too ... it's going to be a pretty big 2017," The Basics said in a post on their official Facebook page.

The alternative rock band, consisting of De Backer, Kris Schroeder and Tim Heath, last hit airwaves in 2015 with their album, The Age of Entitlement.

They remained tight-lipped as to whether fans would hear new Gotye tunes before year's end.

"I don't imagine he'll want to rush anything, but you never know ... I wouldn't imagine anything more than a single though," they said in reply to a fan's Facebook comment.
