The Tasmanian government has defended its handling of alleged misconduct by a youth detention centre worker, amid claims from the staff member he is being kept in the dark about investigations.

A clash between inmates and staff at the northern Ashley Youth Detention Centre in mid-July was captured on CCTV and sparked concerns about a worker's restraint of a boy which has since become the focus of investigations by police, the ombudsman, Work Safe Tasmania and the state service.

"The staff member has been advised that following a complaint lodged by a resident a preliminary review is underway with respect to possible breaches of the code of conduct and this has been done in accordance with state service requirements," Human Services Minister Jacquie Petrusma told parliament on Wednesday.
