The federal government will assist veterans returning to Vietnam for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan with their travel costs.

Veterans Affairs Minister Dan Tehan said this was an important occasion with some veterans choosing to commemorate the anniversary in Australia and others planning to return to Vietnam.

Each Long Tan veteran returning to Vietnam for the anniversary on August 18, plus a travelling companion, will be entitled to claim $1500 for travel expenses.
