Rachel Griffiths has been spotted at the races filming location shots for her upcoming movie about the Melbourne Cup.

The Australian actress is directing the project that will tell the story of Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne and her 2015 win.

Crews filmed at the members stand at Flemington Racecourse on Thursday to collect background footage before it becomes a construction zone.

The members stand will be overhauled in a $128 million project, shutting down parts of the area until the 2018 spring racing season.

"We're getting a lot of special effects plates," she told AAP on Thursday.

"So basically we have to shoot everything that might be shooting back at the members so in order for it to match up."

The movie is still a fair way off, with the script being finalised in the next few weeks.

No actors have been cast yet.
