A 31-year-old man has pleaded guilty to murdering a homeless man near the Perth CBD and also attempting to kill another man in nearby Subiaco.

Daniel James Cohen appeared in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court via videolink from Hakea Prison on Wednesday, when he admitted murdering homeless man Ian John Wilson, 48, on July 9.

Mr Wilson was found dead in his sleeping bag near the entrance to Metrochurch on Beaufort Street.

Cohen also admitted attempting to kill Daniel John Hoskin some time the next day or on July 11 by hitting him with a tomahawk.

As the magistrate ordered pre-sentence and psychiatric reports to be complete by November 24, Cohen rocked back and forth.

He has been remanded in custody, with sentencing scheduled for December 1.
