A gunman is still at large after controversial sports scientist Stephen Dank's house was peppered with bullets.

The 52-year-old was brushed by a bullet in the early hours of Saturday morning after several shots were fired into his Ascot Vale home.

Dank says he's thankful he's ok and has an idea why shots were fired.

"I have my suspicions as to why this has happened," he said in a written statement on Nine News.

"I will say I will not be silenced or bullied and will continue in my attempt to put the truth out there."

Serious crime response team detectives were at Dank's house for the majority of Saturday and have conducted line searches.

Police say they will investigate financial links and associates of Dank, according to Nine News.

Nine News also reported that police suspect the shooter was on foot since there was no vehicle access near Dank's address, and have taken CCTV footage from a neighbour.

Dank was released from hospital early on Saturday and remained at home despite commitments to speak at an event in Bendigo.

Dank was given a life ban by the AFL anti-doping tribunal last year for his role in doping violations against 34 current and past Essendon players.
