Newly-elected Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner is heading south for his first meeting with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and will also hold talks with the South Australian and Victorian premiers.

Mr Gunner will meet SA Premier Jay Weatherill on Tuesday before heading on to Sydney to meet with the PM.

He will round out his southern sortie by meeting with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews ahead of attending the AFL grand final on Saturday.

"For the Northern Territory to thrive, it is absolutely essential for me and my government to have a good working relationship with the federal government," Mr Gunner said.

"My first meeting with the prime minister will be a platform from which to form strong ties, for the benefit of all Territorians."

Mr Gunner expects to cover a range of issues with Mr Weatherill, including transport, GST receipts and economic opportunities for Aboriginal people.
