Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner has wished Territorians a joyful and safe Christmas, while the leader of the ousted Country Liberals Party has thanked his loyalists for support during a tough year.

The leader of the new Labor government stressed the importance of loved ones in the holiday season in a hand-written note to his constituents.

"I hope you enjoy time with those who are special to you," Mr Gunner said.

Opposition Leader Gary Higgins and his deputy Lia Finocchiaro also sent out a festive message, thanking Territorians who "kept faith in difficult times".

The CLP was reduced to just two seats in parliament following a crushing defeat at the August election.

"Your loyalty and dedication is appreciated," they said in a joint statement on Thursday.

The CLP's single term in office was marred by scandals, leadership spills and 18 cabinet reshuffles, and in October Mr Higgins apologised for letting the Territory down.

"There are many challenges ahead for our organisation, but these bring an opportunity to renew and re-establish where we want to be as a party," Mr Higgins and Ms Finocchiaro said.
