Guthrie not for ABC, SBS merger: Ebeid

The head of SBS believes the public broadcaster is more in demand now than 40 years ago, rejecting what he described as a bad idea to merge with the ABC.

Michael Ebeid confirmed to a Senate hearing on Tuesday he had discussed the proposal, raised by outgoing ABC managing director Mark Scott with his successor Michelle Guthrie, but he's not sure she shares Mr Scott's view.

"SBS's need today is certainly far more in demand than even 40 years ago and I think our work is just beginning," he said in Canberra on Tuesday ahead of Ms Guthrie's appearance.
