Hammer attack at Sydney bus stop

A married couple has been attacked with a hammer in a random assault in Sydney's southwest.

A 50-year-old woman was waiting at a bus stop in Liverpool about 7.30am on Friday when approached by a 46-year-old man who started hitting her with a hammer, police allege.

She fled and called her husband, 56, who came to her aid.

Police say he was also attacked by the 46-year-old but managed to detain him until officers arrived and arrested him.

The couple was being treated at Liverpool Hospital with the husband suffering a suspected fractured arm.

Police said they expected to charge the man with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
