A busy Melbourne road has reopened after a truck laden with 42 tonnes of hay crashed into a bridge and tipped over in Melbourne.

The semi-trailer, bound for Gippsland, blocked Swan St, Richmond after being driven into a rail bridge just before 1:30am on Monday.

The truck tipped onto the driver's side but the driver escaped uninjured.

VicRoads had advised drivers that Swan St would remain closed until late morning but a quicker-than-expected clean-up ensured the road reopened just before 8am.

Metro Trains said there were no disruptions to rail services on the bridge, which serves the several lines in Melbourne's east and south-east.
