A psychiatrist has concerns for the mental health of a woman accused of murdering her baby, a judge has been told.

The 27-year-old Newcastle woman appeared in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday via video link from prison charged with slitting the throat of her six-week-old baby in July last year.

The woman's lawyer told Justice Peter Johnson that a psychiatrist was concerned about her mental health in prison and wanted the case resolved "as quickly as possible" so she could receive more appropriate care.

The judge noted that the woman was expected to plead not guilty to murder on grounds of mental illness.

He set the case down for a judge-alone trial before Justice Robert Allan Hulme in Newcastle on September 14.
