An organ weighing as much as four elephants will ring out in Australia for the first time when it's played at Sunday mass in the city of churches.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide says the 16 tonne organ, built in 1927 for a Montreal church that has since closed, has been installed at the city's St Francis Xavier Cathedral.

Archbishop Philip Wilson will bless the instrument, which has nearly 3500 pipes, before an organist makes it sing on Sunday morning.
