Heroism in Minto just like 9/11: Turnbull

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has linked the stabbing in Minto with the 9/11 attacks 15 years ago, for the violent Islamist ideology and the heroism trying to tackle it.

He noted the knife attack in Sydney's west occurred on the eve of the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.

"Connecting them both is a violent Islamist ideology," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Canberra in Sunday.

"What also is consistent or common between them is heroism."

He said while those who died in the 9/11 attacks are mourned, the heroism of those who rushed to the aid of the victims is also honoured.

Likewise in Minto, Mr Turnbull said there was an owner of some premises who sheltered a 59-year-old man who had been assaulted and a bystander who confronted the assailant and managed to keep him at bay until police arrived.

"We honour those heroes of today just as we honour the heroes of 9/11," he said.

He said it is critical Australia remains agile as its enemies seek to attack its people.

He said the 9/11 terrorist attack changed the world.

"It saw us stand then as we stand today shoulder to shoulder with free nations in the battle against terrorism and have been shoulder to shoulder in that battle ever since," he said.

Mr Turnbull will visit New York and the 9/11 memorial with his wife Lucy next week.
