Derryn Hinch has been slammed by a Liberal backbencher in an angry tirade after calling for a ban on live exports.

Senator Chris Back launched a scathing attack in parliament on Monday night, describing the Gillard government ban in 2011 as the worst piece of legislation that ever came down in Australia.

It came after Senator Hinch used his first speech in the Senate to accuse the government of putting money before morality by backing live exports.

"It is obvious that Senator Hinch has no understanding of the live export trade in this country at all," Senator Back, a veterinarian, told parliament.

"I will not stand by and listen to the nonsense that was visited upon this parliament this evening by this man who pretends to think because he's been on the end of a radio microphone for some years he is the voice of all knowledge in this industry.

"Senator Hinch stands condemned for his lack of knowledge."
