Thousands of revellers are set to flock to Hobart's waterfront to celebrate the arrival of 2017.

The Taste of Tasmania will host the biggest party by the water, with a ticketed event for 9000 party-goers headlined by Aussie singer Kate Ceberano.

On Hobart's southeast coast, another 10,000 music lovers will mark the new year at the Falls Festival in Marion Bay.

Extra police will be brought in to monitor the music event and the celebrations at the waterfront, where early fireworks will light up the skies at 9.30pm amid a family-friendly carnival atmosphere.

It will be a taste of what's to come for the show-stopping midnight extravaganza.

The weather will be mild, with a forecast top of 25, and a slight chance of rain.

Revellers will be able to board home safely with a Metro bus operating late night services in Hobart with $2 flat rate fares from 6pm, with most northern and eastern shore services departing from Salamanca Place stops.

The Nightrider services will run in addition to a regular Saturday timetable on December 31.

Over the New Year period, Tasmania Police will be out in force cracking down on drivers as part of Operation Crossroads, in a bid to reduce road casualties.
