A 74-year-old has paid more than $2000 to an overseas operator after being told he had won a luxury holiday.

Police have issued a warning about the scam which usually arrives by mail telling 'winners' to phone a Malaysian number and pay a deposit to an offshore account before being able to claim their prize.

"A 74-year-old man from Devonport was recently caught in this scam. He paid $2120 in two payments and was then asked for more funds," Constable Rory Carmichael said, urging caution about these unsolicited requests for funds.
