Beijing Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker has been elected as chair of the Australian Olympic Committee's Athletes Commission.

The 34-year-old three-time Olympian was chosen by his fellow Athletes Commission members with Rio rowing gold medallist and former chair Kim Brennan appointed his deputy.

The Commission provides advice to the AOC Executive from an athletes' perspective.

"We've achieved some great things over the past four years and I think the fact we have a number of athletes returning to the Commission will be great for continuity," said Hooker, who was first elected to the Commission following the London Games.

"This will help us with the implementation of those tasks already in the works, such as an athlete-career transition program that will be run by the AOC, while we are also keen to shift our focus to other areas of improvement as well."

Rio canoe slalom medallist Jessica Fox, boxer Shelley Watts and veteran hockey representative Jamie Dwyer are the new faces on the Commission.
