How Prince Harry and Kate Middleton's bromance is typical of in-laws

She is the sister he never had, a much-valued female presence in the life of the prince deprived at such a young age of his beloved mother.

He is her firm ally as she develops her role in the Royal family, putting her at her ease with a well-timed in-joke as she performs the public duties she’s still relatively new to.

And over the 13 years that Kate has been with husband Prince William, her touching friendship with his brother Prince Harry has developed into a fine bromance.

Whenever the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are with the rest of the Royal family, Harry is never far from Kate’s side.

At the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration in The Mall on Sunday their closeness was clear. The fun-loving Prince regularly has 34 year-old Kate in fits of giggles and the pair are clearly totally at ease in each other’s company.

Both William and Harry know their late mother Princess Diana didn’t have it easy from many in the royal household when she married Prince Charles in 1981.

So the brothers have been adamant that history must not be repeated, and both safeguard and nurture Kate’s place at the heart of the family, as wife and mother to two future kings.

Royal expert Ingrid Seward, editor in chief of Majesty Magazine, says: “Harry is very sensitive to the fact that Kate had to come into this role and wasn’t born into it.

“He realises this is exactly what happened to his mother except his mother was much younger. He empathises with Kate and what she is going through. We know it is not as easy for her as it looks. She finds it quite difficult although she would never let on as she is too much of a pro. Kate and Harry giggle about silly things together and he is very gentle with her.”

From the moment Kate got engaged to Prince William in 2010, Harry, 31, has been a loyal confidant and friend to his new sister-in-law.

After the 2011 royal wedding, Harry said: “To have a big sister is very, very nice. I’ve got to know Catherine pretty well, but now that she’s becoming part of the family, I’m really looking forward to getting her under my wing – or she’ll be taking me under her wing probably.”

The following year Kate and Harry stuck together at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and seemed to have great fun in each other’s company. Months later they teamed up as the only Royals at the Olympic Closing Ceremony. At black-tie functions Kate often arrives with both William and Harry at her side.

Harry was born to it and understands both the privilege and restrictions in equal measure. So Kate could not have a better ally than Harry – and she knows it.

While William, 33, as future King, maintains a more formal public persona, cheeky Harry likes to lighten the mood of most occasions – with Kate appearing to be his willing partner in crime.

No one understands your husband’s family better than his brother – and there is no one better to share a family joke with that would go right over the heads of anyone else listening.

My own brother-in-law Danny is one of my closest friends. Unlike Kate, who has brother James, 29, I don’t have a brother – so Danny has become the little brother I never had, just as Harry refers to Kate as the sister he never had.

Like Harry, Danny is the family joker and he can somehow take the mickey out of me endlessly and get away with it. But I know that if the going gets tough I can rely on him 100% – if I ever need his help he is there like a shot.

It is a unique relationship. He knows the man I love better than anyone else and therefore is perfectly placed to understand our marriage and the ups and downs we will have along the way.

Joining any family is a learning curve, but becoming part of the Royal family is undoubtedly steeper than most.

You can tell from pictures of the two together that Kate and Harry not only share a sense of humour but, crucially, have got each other’s backs.

Much as he likes to play the fool, Harry knows that while his responsibilities are nothing like as serious as William’s, it’s as much his job to protect and look after Kate as it is his brother’s.

I am sure that Harry values Kate’s opinion on any girls that catch his eye.

Having been at William’s side for the past 13 years, she will have had a unique insight into his romantic relationships. Harry has spoken out about the difficulty of finding a girlfriend given the huge public interest in the Royals. He knows that any girl he is linked with will have her personal life raked over with a fine tooth comb.

And Kate has been there. She is possibly the only person who fully understands the pressure and scrutiny of joining the 21st-century royal family, so it is only natural that Harry would turn to her for dating advice.

Harry knows he can trust Kate to offer the benefit of her experience to any future girlfriend. He also knows that finding a girl who gets along with Kate has huge advantages.

Kate became friends with Harry’s exes Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas – and she’s sure to make every effort to do the same with the next girl Harry becomes serious about.

Ingrid Seward says: “I know that he introduces Kate to all his girlfriends who mean something to him. She was friendly with Chelsy and Cressie.

“Harry hasn’t got a mum, and Kate is a couple of years older than him, so she is a good female influence in his life. William is quite weighed down with the responsibility so at least Kate can just have a giggle with Harry, because everyone can have a giggle with Harry. They have a place in each other’s lives and I think it is rather charming.”

For now the young Royals remain a trio – and are happily building their own Royal powerbase.

While William and Kate could easily have ventured out on their own, they have ensured Harry is still on board, making their position as the vibrant future of the Royal family rock solid.

Their Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry promotes their charitable interests and they share a Royal Household.

That strong working relationship is only made possible because of the concrete friendship between the three of them. Harry has said in the past that he loves Kate to bits – and it looks like the feeling is mutual.
