SOCCEROOS PLAYER RATINGS

Mat Ryan (goalkeeper) - 8. Solid as ever and made ripping saves either side of halftime to prevent Japan from adding to their goal tally

Brad Smith - 8. Set up the Socceroos penalty and subsequent goal with a superb cross and looked dangerous all night

Matthew Spiranovic - 7. Solid down back and - chief aerial threat - close to putting the Socceroos ahead with a header in the 87th minute

Trent Sainsbury - 6. Wasn't terrible but his errant pass five minutes into the game led to Japan's goal

Ryan McGowan - 7. Booked for a clumsy tackle late in the first half but generally calm and composed down back

Mile Jedinak - 6. Looked a step behind the pace at times but stepped up when it mattered, converting from the penalty spot to put the Socceroos level

Massimo Luongo - 7. Slow to get into the game but caused problems with his pace and created pressure in the forward half

Aaron Mooy - 7.5. Had a couple of quality crosses and was generally solid playing as a link man

Tom Rogic - 7.5. Impressed with his sharp ball use and was rarely beaten one-on-one

Tomi Juric - 7. Earned the penalty that led to the Socceroos' first goal and was unlucky not to win another a short time later

Apostolos Giannou - 5. Struggled to get into the game and was substituted in the 57th minute

Tim Cahill (sub for Tomi Juric) - 6. Had limited chances to get involved in his 20 minutes on the ground

Robbie Kruse (sub for Apostolos Giannou) - 6. Looked a little off his best but didn't have much time to work into the game

Matthew Leckie - (sub for Aaron Mooy) N/A. Only spent 10 minutes on the ground.
