They might look funny to us but South Australia's giant cuttlefish seem to have been especially fond of each other lately, with the population growing dramatically over the past few years.

State Tourism Minister Leon Bignell says there are now about 177,000 of the tentacled molluscs in the state, up from 13,000 three years ago.

The Spencer Gulf attracts the only dense grouping of the giant cuttlefish in the world, with the creatures flocking to its reef in winter to spawn.
