Hundreds of dead starfish at Perth beach

Almost 200 dead starfish have been found at a Perth beach after an initial report inidicated there could be up to 1000.

Department of Fisheries and marine officers visited South Beach and nearby North Coogee on Monday and Tuesday.

Samples have been sent to the department's fish health unit to determine what caused the starfish to die.

No other dead aquatic animals had been seen or reported in the area, the department said in a statement on Wednesday.

People have been advised not to collect, handle or move any dead starfish.

Fisheries also advises not to swim or fish in water with large numbers of dead fish and to not collect dead fish as bait or for consumption.
