There have been no sightings of a man who twice pointed a gun at police during a pursuit on the NSW north coast on the weekend, with the public urged to keep their distance.

Police say it is most likely that 37-year-old David Bell is still armed and dangerous.

Bell was pulled over for a random breath test on the Pacific Highway at North Macksville in his white van on Sunday morning when he pulled out a gun before driving off.

He again aimed the shotgun at police at a road block on a dirt road at nearby Valla before driving into bushland. His abandoned van was found about 11am.

Police have warned people to avoid him as he may be armed and is wanted on interstate warrants.

The search for Bell in bushland was suspended on Sunday afternoon but local police are on the lookout for him and Coffs Harbour police will address media at midday on Monday.

Anyone who sees Bell, who is described as Caucasian, about 180cm tall with a solid build, brown hair and with tattooed fingers, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
