Insurer IAG plans to cut about $250 million in operational costs over the next three years as part of its strategic plan.

IAG chief executive Peter Harmer says the cuts were part of the company's strategic themes of leading, or placing customer experiences first, and fuelling.

"Fuelling means making the necessary changes to the way we operate - simplifying processes and systems, and optimising resources to be more efficient so we can invest in leading," he said in a statement.
