A service has been held at the Brisbane Sikh temple for slain bus driver Manmeet Alisher, as a memorial in his honour is announced.

Hundreds attended the service at the temple at Eight Mile Plains on Monday evening to remember the 29-year-old, including his brother and friend who had travelled from India, as well as members of his extended family.

Earlier in the day, Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk met with Manmeet's brother Amit, before announcing that a permanent public memorial to the bus driver and singer would be built.

Manmeet, also known as Manmeet Sharma, was killed on Friday when an incendiary device was thrown at him by a man when he stopped to pick up passengers while driving his regular bus route in Brisbane's south.

Mr Quirk also attended the temple service, telling those gathered that the thoughts and prayers of all are with Manmeet's family.

"I've set up an appeal to provide some financial support to the family, so that they can be supplied with the necessary funds to come to Australia when they need to during the course of justice," Mr Quirk said.

Moorooka man Anthony O'Donohue, 48, has been charged with murdering Manmeet, as well as the attempted murder of 11 passengers who were on the bus.

The state government has confirmed O'Donohue had received treatment in mental health facilities in the past, and Queensland Police have reiterated that there does not appear to be a racial motivation for the attack.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Grace Grace also attended the temple service, telling those gathered that while they may be asking questions about what comes next, they should have faith in the justice process.

"Please be rest assured that justice will take its course," Ms Grace said, speaking directly to Manmeet's brother.

"Please be rest assured that we mourn with you, that we value the Indian community, including Manmeet."
