A man has been charged over an assault after an injured and distressed woman tried to wave down motorists near a freeway south of Perth in the early hours of New Year's Day.

It is alleged that some time before 3am on Sunday there was a fight between the pair, who know each other, near the cycle path of the Kwinana Freeway between Namberlup Bridge and Lakes Road in Parklands.

Police found the 36-year-old woman after she tried to wave down drivers.

An ambulance took her to Peel Health Campus where she remains in a stable condition.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with acts intending to cause bodily harm and is due to appear in Mandurah Magistrates Court on Friday.

Detectives are appealing to the person who called police to report a man in boxer shorts walking a dog around the time of the incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
