Jack Colwell teams with Fennesz for remake

Sydney independent musician Jack Colwell has guts.

The singer-songwriter was brave enough to hand over his EP, Only When Flooded Could I Let Go, to be completely reworked by six other artists.

"It's like putting your child out and getting something back in return," Colwell told AAP.

The classically trained performer has been on the road supporting Sarah Blasko on her national tour, but it was at someone else's gig that he discovered the first artist for this project.

Viennese electronic producer Fennesz had returned to perform in Australia for the first time in 10 years and Colwell felt compelled to reach out to him after the performance.

The ambient 90s noise hero not only agreed to rework one of Colwell's tracks, he has become a sort of godfather of the project.

"He was one of the first people that we got on board and he was very helpful in attracting other artists and producers that I wanted to work with. He definitely helped with the direction of it," Colwell said.

The rest of the eclectic group soon followed with LA rockers Health, Bjork-favourite Rabit, and producers Roly Porter, Ash Koosha, and Marcus Whale each taking on one of Colwell's own compositions.

"It's not just all 20-somethings working with their laptops at home, there's some legacy acts in there and some new blood, and people you wouldn't normally expect to hear alongside my music or my work," Colwell said.

The result is the completely reworked and renamed EP, When The World Explodes.

Colwell is keen to point out that this is not a collection of remixes but a complete remake.

"The songs are almost unrecognisable from the originals, they have become new entities with this remaking process," he said.

As for putting that baby out into the world, Colwell feels it was worth the risk.

"I would say that each track that I got back met my expectations and then some, and changed the way that I thought about."
