Japan posted a trade surplus of 152.5 billion yen ($A1.8 billion) in November, the Ministry of Finance says.

A year ago, the world's third biggest economy posted a deficit of 387.5 billion yen.

However, the November surplus was significantly smaller than many economists had expected.

Exports fell 0.4 per cent and imports dropped 8.8 per cent, the ministry said in a preliminary report on Monday.

In trade with mainland China, the country's biggest trading partner, Japan logged a deficit of 384.2 billion yen against a 594.1-billion-yen deficit the previous year. Exports rose 4.4 per cent, while imports were down 9.9 per cent.

In business with the US, Japan's trade expanded 2.1 per cent to 581.1 billion yen. Exports were down 1.8 per cent, and imports decreased by 5.1 per cent.
