WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NEW NSW DEPUTY PREMIER JOHN BARILARO:

- Born in the southern NSW town of Queanbeyan, son of Italian immigrants

- Ran his family's windows and door manufacturing business before starting his political career as a member of the Queanbeyan City Council in 2008

- Early baptism in politics happened "during family discussions and arguments around the kitchen table over a plate of mum's lasagne"

- Has held the seat of Monaro since the 2011 election on a tiny margin of two per cent

- Made the move to the frontbench in 2014 and currently holds three portfolios: Regional Development, Skills and Small Business

- Married to Deanna, father to two daughters

- Departing deputy premier Troy Grant is a close friend and became godfather to Mr Barilaro's daughter last month

- Well-known for his cooking skills, and put up a strong entry at a local charity competition using his family's mozzarella-parmesan lasagne recipe.
