Oscar winner Jon Voight has taken a very public swipe at his actor friend Robert De Niro after he called Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump a "pig", "a con" and "a bulls--- artist".

Long-time Republican Jon, 77, blasted fellow Oscar winner Robert, 73, on Twitter for his "ugly rant", while defending Donald over his lewd remarks about women in leaked 2005 tapes from an segment.

"I am so ashamed of my fellow actor Bobby DeNiro's rant against Donald Trump," star Jon tweeted.

"What foul words he used against a presidential nominee who has worked harder then [sic] any other man I know in the past year and a half to get a good message to the American people.

"I don't know of too many men who haven't expressed some sort of similar sexual terms toward women, especially in their younger years.

"Donald Trump's words were not as damaging as Robert DeNiro's ugly rant. Trump's words did not hurt anyone. Can you imagine if any Republican said words like Robert De Niro used – against Hilary [sic] Clinton or Barack Obama? All hell would break loose."

"I am calling for all Trump supporters to express their outrage and anger against DeNiro and all of the Republican turncoats against Trump. Let Donald Trump know we are completely behind him, and may God give him the strength to continue his calling."

Angelina Jolie's father is one of few celebrities publicly still in Trump's corner after he was caught on tape boasting about kissing, groping and trying to force himself on women ("Grab them by the p----. You can do anything").

As the scandal hit fever pitch over the weekend, Robert De Niro appeared in a one-minute video for non-partisan group #VoteYourFuture, encouraging people to vote – and using the opportunity to take down Trump.

"I mean, he's so blatantly stupid," Robert said. "He's a punk, he's a dog, he's a pig, he's a con, a bulls--- artist, a mutt who doesn't know what he's talking about, doesn't do his homework, doesn't care, thinks he's gaming society, doesn't pay his taxes.

"He talks about how he wants to punch people in the face? Well, I'd like to punch him in the face. This is somebody that we want for president? I don't think so.

"He's an embarrassment to this country. It makes me so angry that this country has gotten to the point where this fool – this bozo – has wound up where he has."
