A man remains in hospital with head and facial injuries following a serious assault outside a karaoke bar in Sydney's CBD.

The 23-year-old was knocked to the ground following an argument with a group of men outside the bar on George Street about 3.30am on Friday, police say.

He was reportedly at K Square Karaoke Lounge with a group of four female friends and was waiting outside when he was confronted by another group unknown to him.

The attackers began kicking the 23-year-old after they knocked him down, News Corp reports.

The group fled the scene and was last seen walking north on Sussex Street, police say.

Emergency services treated the man, who suffered head and facial injuries, before he was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital to undergo surgery.
