A new report has shed light on how the Church of Scientology influenced Katie Holmes' decision to leave her six-year marriage to Tom Cruise back in 2012.

Speaking with the Daily Mail Online, Ron Miscavige, the father of notorious church leader David Miscavige, alleges that Katie left Tom while their daughter Suri was still young because she didn't want to end up like Nicole Kidman. Nicole's relationship with her daughter, Bella, splintered after she split with Tom and the church.

According to Ron, actress Katie, 37, was fearful of Scientology's "disconnection" policy, which requires members to cut off contact with any "suppressive persons" who walk away from the church.

"It's a toxic policy that ruins lives," Ron told Daily Mail Online. "Katie just didn't want that to happen so she left."

Katie apparently saw red flags when church members moved into her Los Angeles family home to be closer to her famous husband.

"That didn't sit so well with Katie, of course, and it hurt the marriage," said Ron. "She and Tom had big differences about the way life should be lived."

Katie split with Tom when Suri was just six years old. Ron, who recently published the memoir , believes it was a smart move on Katie's part.

"The big issue really was raising Suri as a Scientologist," said the 80-year-old. "If that happened, some day it was a possibility that she would disconnect from Katie…Ultimately this is what has happened to me."

It also happened to Nicole Kidman, who has been estranged from her adopted daughter since her 2001 divorce from Tom. According to reports, Nicole was not even invited to 23-year-old Bella's wedding last year, and wasn't even aware of it.

Another potential fear of Katie's could have been ending up like another prominent Scientologist wife – Shelly Miscavige, who has been missing for a decade.

Former church member Leah Remini was reportedly punished after she asked the Scientology leader David why his wife wasn't at Tom and Katie's 2006 wedding.

"I kept asking throughout the night, 'Does anybody know where Shelly is?'" the 45-year-old actress told magazine, saying she was finally met with the response: "I don't think you have the f------ rank, quite honestly, to ask where Shelly is."

Leah says that fear of losing her daughter ultimately lead to her also leaving Scientology in July 2013. She immediately filed a missing persons report with the LAPD for Shelly, whose unexplained absence was still heavily distressing.

"I still don't have an answer," she said of her missing friend.
