Keating slams Labor over South China Sea

Paul Keating has criticised Labor's defence spokesman for suggesting the government must leave it up to the military to determine freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea.

The former prime minister slammed Richard Marles' comments, saying a decision to sail a naval vessel through a disputed area is one which should only be taken by an elected government with full knowledge of the circumstances.

"You don't outsource decisions like this to a naval commander. Or even to an admiral. This question goes to the very essence of democracy," Mr Keating told The Australian on Tuesday.
