Keith Urban considers Sydney 'home'

Keith Urban is back in Australia to kick off his Ripcord tour, having performed dates across the US, but says it feels like he's come home.

"Nashville and Sydney both feel equally like home," Urban told AAP in Sydney.

The country star was born in New Zealand, raised in Brisbane, and now lives in Nashville, yet has strong feelings for the harbour city. It helps that he's married to Nicole Kidman who was raised on Sydney's north shore.

"Sydney is my favourite city in the whole world, hands down, and I only lived here for two years before I lived in America. Sydney has always felt so home to me and as soon as Nic and I got married of course we spent way more time here," he said.

Urban will perform eight arena dates across the country with Adelaide the first stop on Tuesday night where he will showcase his ARIA No.1 album Ripcord.

"It's come alive, that's how it feels on stage. It's such a great live album, these songs ... all of them are built for live and I think that was probably subconscious as I was writing a lot of the record. I'm always thinking about playing live and what songs are going to work," he said.

Ripcord has been the second stage of a two-part musical evolution for Urban. His last album, Fuse, brought him into new musical territory with some electronic influences. With this album he's gone even further with disco king Nile Rodgers, rapper Pitbull and Kanye West producer Jeff Bhasker among the collaborators.

It was his time in Sydney in 2012, while he worked as judge on The Voice, that Urban discovered new influences while he tuned in local radio stations on his way to and from the TV studio. The following year he released Fuse.

"Sydney is an amazing place for new music. It's so ahead of so many places because it absorbs stuff from Europe and America on the fringes and it represents it here. That's what I found exciting about doing The Voice, immersing myself in Sydney music," he said.

Kidman and the couple's two daughters, Faith Margaret and Sunday Rose, are on their way from the US to join Urban and he says the family will spend Christmas in Australia.

Kidman will also be attending the Australian premiere of her upcoming film Lion in Sydney on December 19, just two days after Urban wraps up his Aussie tour.
