Children who may have witnessed a suspected assault near Wollongong on Christmas Eve could hold the key to solving how a man died, police believe.

Ico Trajanovski, 66, was found badly beaten outside a pub on Wentworth Street in Port Kembla last Saturday night and taken to hospital.

The 66-year-old died from his injuries on Tuesday.

Investigators believe he was injured in an unprovoked attack by one or more men outside the pub and want to speak to anyone who may know more.

Detectives believe a number of people, including children, were standing outside the licensed premises and may have witnessed the incident.

They are particularly keen to speak with people who may have attended a nearby Macedonian community function on the night of the deadly attack.
