Kings still title favourites: Perth coach

Despite beating Sydney on Thursday night, Perth Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson says the Kings are rockstars and deserve to be favourites for this year's NBL championship.

Gleeson's Wildcats led at every change at Perth Arena to start round seven of the NBL season and the 93-80 victory shot them back to the top of the table - at the expense of the Kings.

But the two coaches have differing opinions on which team deserves to be the front-runner for this year's championship.

"Sydney are rockstars. You don't win one game and think (that we're favourites)," Gleeson said.

"They are super talented.

"They can go (deep). The other guys on the bench can play 40 minutes and drop 30 points. They are miles above.

"Those guys include NBA-experienced players Steve Blake (five points on Thursday) and Josh Powell (six points).

But Gaze deflected the praise, saying Perth have the greater depth and should be considered a real danger of successfully defending their championship.

"We've got some very good talent. But it's a bit overblown, some of the comments," Gaze said.

"I think that these guys (Perth) have enormous talent and experience and they are very, very, very good.

"To me they are still the team to beat."

Gaze however did admit the loss of Damian Martin is a big blow for the Wildcats.

In their win over the Kings on Thursday night, they managed 32 points from their bench players, including 10 from Jesse Wagstaff.

"It's a little overblown, their problems," Gaze said.

"Not withstanding that they are problems. Not having Damian Martin, the best defender in the competition, in my view; possibly the best defender ever in the league, is a setback.

"But they have enough depth and talent that they camouflage it well.

"And full credit to Trevor for the way he gets them to play without their leader and one of the best players in the competition."
