Australia's men's hockey team beat Malaysia 5-0 at the International Festival of Hockey in Melbourne on Saturday, with the goals coming from Jake Whetton, Scott Boyde, Aaron Kleinschmidt and Aran Zalewski.

The hockey was scrappy in the first quarter before Whetton gave the Kookaburras the advantage, tapping the ball from directly in front of the net to send it straight past Malaysia's goalkeeper Kumar Subramiam.

Australia were unable to capitalise on multiple chances, but their second goal came in the 43rd minute when Whetton doubled his tally.

Boyde scored a field goal in the 51st minute, Kleinschmidt did the same in the 56th and Zalewski finished the rout with Australia's fifth, also a field goal, in the 57th minute.

Kookaburras interim head coach Paul Gaudoin said he was pleased with Australia's performance as they brought up their third win of the tournament.

"I thought we were able to create a lot of chances. We wore them down in the second half and scored some fantastic goals," Gaudoin said.

"Defensively we were reasonably sound and overall it was a reasonable effort.

"We'll need to be better again tomorrow against whoever we meet, whether that's New Zealand or India."
