Labor has brought on a motion condemning the government over seeking to water down Howard government gun laws in exchange for votes in the Senate.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says a deal between the coalition and Liberal Democrats senator David Leyonhjelm struck in August last year amounted to trading-off the gun laws to block Labor amendments to an immigration-related bill.

The government has moved that Mr Shorten no longer be heard.
