Liberal MP in Russian embassy rent deal

The Greens have questioned the judgment of a Liberal MP renting an investment property in Canberra to a Russian embassy staffer.

Rick Wilson, the member for O'Connor in Western Australia, has listed the property on his parliamentary pecuniary interest register noting it is "tenanted by the embassy of the Russian Federation".

Mr Wilson said he bought the property in September, but was unaware at the time of settlement who was the tenant in the pre-existing lease arrangement.

"The property is managed by an agent and I have had no contact with the tenant," Mr Wilson said, adding a Russian embassy staffer lived there.

He said he had not informed the prime minister or foreign minister.

"I have made the appropriate declarations as recommended under parliamentary guidelines," he said.

Greens democracy spokeswoman Senator Lee Rhiannon told AAP the arrangement was unusual.

"Taking in representatives of another government as paying tenants may not have broken any rules but it shows poor judgment on the part of Mr Wilson," Senator Rhiannon said.

"There is no justification for MPs having second jobs or profiteering from businesses that bring them into conflict with their work representing their constituents."
