Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat says the hijackers of a Libyan plane have surrendered and have been taken into custody.

"Hijackers surrendered, searched and taken in custody," he wrote on Twitter on Friday.

"Final crew members leaving aircraft with hijackers," he said in an earlier post.

All the passengers and crew on board the Afriqiyah Airways A320 jet, that was on an internal flight from Sebha to Tripoli in Libya but was forced to divert to the Mediterranean island of Malta, have been released.
