Brisbane ruckman Archie Smith found out the hard way that a stingray's barb is tougher than a Lion's foot on New Year's Eve.

The 21-year-old counted down the final moments of 2016 in hospital after stepping on a stingray at Nobby's Beach on the Gold Coast on Saturday morning.

He had the barb removed from his right foot in hospital, and hopes to only miss a couple of weeks of pre-season training.

"Safe to say the stingray won this round #whataretheodds" he posted on Twitter on Sunday, along with a graphic image of his bloodied foot and the barb.

Smith played three games for the Lions in 2016 after debuting in round 19, averaging 13 disposals and kicking one goal.
