A teenager charged with carrying out a knife attack in London that left an American woman dead and five people injured, including two Australians, will go to trial on February 6.

Zakaria Bulhan, 19, appeared in London's Old Bailey court on Tuesday accused of murdering retired teacher Darlene Horton, 64, of Florida at Russell Square in central London last Wednesday evening.

He is also charged with the attempted murder of an Australian man and an Australian woman who were released from hospital soon after being treated for non-life threatening stab wounds.

Three other people, from the UK, the US and Israel, also suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Bulhan, a Norwegian national of Somali origin who moved to the UK in 2002, appeared by video link from Wandsworth Prison on Tuesday wearing a prison issue yellow, green and white jumpsuit.

He was unrepresented but the Old Bailey's top judge, the Recorder of London Nicholas Hilliard, set a trial date of February 6.
