Maclaren ripe for Socceroos start: Aloisi

John Aloisi reckons the time is right for Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou to put his faith in Jamie Maclaren to lead the line in next week's World Cup qualifier.

Maclaren is in Thailand with the national team and will miss Friday night's A-League encounter between Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United.

Considering he was not in Postecoglou's original squad for the clash against Thailand on Tuesday night, it's been a remarkable turn of events for the 23-year-old, who made his first international appearance in a friendly against England earlier this year.

Two weeks ago, Maclaren had not even opened his A-League account, but a sudden flash of good form for the Roar and an injury to Tomi Juric (knee) has completely changed the landscape.

Maclaren now looks the best candidate to start up front for Australia, and Aloisi hopes that's the choice Postecoglou makes.

"He's not scared to blood a young player, he's shown that," Aloisi said on Thursday.

"But also, Macca needs to do what he has been doing here at training there, and prove to Ange he's ready to start.

"We don't know how he's gone this week, I haven't spoken to anyone, but hopefully he's taken the form he's shown here, there, and Ange plays him.

"Sometimes luck comes to those who deserve it and Macca, definitely last season, scoring 20 goals, was an unbelievable achievement.

"This year, the last two games he's shown that he's still got goals in him. We always knew that. If he does start, he'll do well."

Maclaren has been in camp with the Socceroos since the weekend and Aloisi said the lead-in will give Postecoglou ample time to fit him into the team's system.

"He knows what type of player Macca is and he'll fit him into their way of playing and he'll help them with that," he said.

"(I told him) enjoy every time you put on the green and gold because that's the ultimate for any footballer... and try and get to a World Cup, because it's the best feeling in the world."
