NSW batsman Nic Maddinson can shore up his place in the Australian Test squad with another Sheffield Shield innings of substance on Wednesday.

Maddinson made 80 against South Australia in the first innings at Adelaide Oval, and will get another hit on Wednesday.

The Blues will resume their second innings at 1-15, a lead of 48 runs over the South Australians.

Maddinson is listed to come in next, with Ed Cowan (8no) and Kurtis Patterson (7no) at the crease.

Maddinson made a duck on his Test debut but is favoured to retain his spot for the series opener against Pakistan starting on December 15 in Brisbane.

But his fellow Test hopeful Callum Ferguson has slipped further from contention after another failure for the Redbacks on Tuesday - he scored just seven, as his lean stretch continues.
