A majority of voters continue to back a royal commission into the banking industry despite the Turnbull government's reluctance to agree to one, a new survey shows.

As the coalition's parliamentary hearings with bank bosses get underway in Canberra on Tuesday, a 1400 person-wide survey by think-tank The Australia Institute shows 68 per cent support a royal commission or similar inquiry.

More than three-quarters agree the big four banks should put customers ahead of shareholders and should pass ono any reductions to the cash rate by the Reserve Bank.
