A man has died at a beach and a toddler has been airlifted to hospital after being pulled from a swimming pool in separate incidents in NSW.

Police believe the man, 51, may have suffered a medical episode while swimming off Umina Beach on the NSW Central Coast.

Emergency workers were called just before 2pm on Monday after the man got into distress in the water, but paramedics were unable to save him.

Meanwhile, a NSW Ambulance spokesman says they were called to a property at Nowra Hill on the NSW south coast about midday after a boy believed to be aged two was pulled from a backyard pool.

The boy was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital in an unknown condition before being airlifted by helicopter to the Sydney Children's Hospital.

The incidents follow a spate of drownings across NSW since Christmas.
