A man has been charged with lighting a scrub fire in Sydney's west in hot conditions.

The 34-year-old man was caught by Rural Fire Service officers who were called out to the blaze in Londonderry on Monday afternoon, before police arrived.

He was charged with setting fire to another's property and bailed to face Penrith Court in January.

About 20 metres of scrub was destroyed before the RFS was able to bring it under control, police said.
